Fall is here and the holidays are fast approaching! What a nice time to start thinging about holiday food and fun. If you are an entertainer then you might like the tutorial here on Pumpkin Napkin Rings. I will have NO TIME for entertaining or blogs for a while...since I am devoting my spare time these days gearing up for the big SHOW! You are all invited...it will be an awesome event with so many wonderful artists and crafters and just in time for those last minute gifts for Christmas.

The Atomic Holiday Bazaar in Sarasota, Florida will be held on December 10 and 11, 2011. It's been so much fun! I'm creating INVENTORY! Wow...I am so used to making one of something and then trying something else! Thinking about a collection of items that represents me has been tough and time consuming! In the midst of that, I've also had some requests for customized bottle stoppers and bottle openers...when they are finished I promise to post!

This week, I had a great time teaching a Pumpkin Napkin Ring class at the Laughing Ladies. Cathy is awesome to allow me to use her shop Laughing Ladies to play with clay! She has several friends, who wanted napkin rings for the holidays so I came up with something and we had a blast! Food, wine, cookies...what...no CHOCOLATE??? Oh...did somebody mention clay! We had a LOT of clay!

Here are my examples for the class: Don't know how I came up with this, but I certainly had pumpkins running through my brain.

Don't know what that little blob is there...but the whirly gig is kind cute, huh????

I experimented a while and discovered that the trick to success is baking the basic ring first, then adding a second layer, making sure that the seams are never lined up...this will add stability to your ring and prevent then seams from popping apart.

Make sure you bake long enough for the added thickness of the pumpkin! I use Premo clay and bake twice, at least 45 minutes each time. Have fun!

Just finished some new little trinkets. These are tiny, about two inches high at the most, colored with alcohol inks and hand drawn. I love the aged old world colors. Great to use as magnets, charms, scrapbook accessories etc. Hope you enjoy!

Just fixed my Etsy shop! I have not been using it for quite some time, as the name has been wrong. Now that Etsy has allowed a one time shop name change, I was able to get the name spelled correctly. I just posted one of my cards there. Will spend some more time in the next few days, listing some other items.
I'm going to be cleaning out my studio and hope to be posting a bunch of things to pass along! A few items are already on my Artfire Shop. Keep checking back to see new items and email me if you are interested. I have an entire stash of vintage beads and findings that belonged to my mom. Much of it is in really good shape and just looking for a new home!

I'm still working on getting ready for the Atomic Holiday Bazaar. It's coming up in December. Be sure to mark the dates and plan to attend.

Tried to post a picture of the tutorial for the pumpkin and candy corn, but I'm having trouble doing that. It's a pdf file and I'm so new to blogging that I need more time to figure it out. In the meantime, I got these from Pat Stull, my friend and "clay mate". I just photgraphed the hand out and here they are. Not the best, but you can maybe get the idea. My entry in the Sari Ribbon Party Blog Hop!

I've had my ribbon in the drawer for some time. When I would open the drawer, it would whisper to me..."use me....use me". I could hear it calling even after I shut the drawer. I would take it out, hold it, admire it, then tuck it away..."no, I'm saving you for something special". I thought it was soooo beautiful. Then I happened across the Sari Ribbon Party Blog Hop and inspiration came crashing into my brain. I thought of my little bundle of ribbon and just wanted to make something! I was in love with the color of this...from red, to purple to gold.   So I opened the drawer and she screamed at me..."USE ME NOW, I'm a sari ribbon" and so I did.

It's never been my style to crash a party...I usually sit quietly and wait for an invitation and then ask what I can bring, or who I can bring, but that day I just went full steam ahead...because the ribbon told me too, it demanded attention and the ribbon really wanted to go to a party.  So, I grabbed the ribbon and my clay and got to work....wow....a ribbon blog hop!!! that's cool!!! Not to mention, I've been totally inspirationless when it comes to jewelry, but somehow when I opened the drawer and the ribbon spoke, well....how can you refuse a talking ribbon....really!
Now I wanted to go to the blog hop too! In fact, I've been neglecting the blog and thought the blog might enjoy the party also.

I wanted to be in a room full of artists with all those pretty ribbons..all the luscious jewel colors, I imagined myself with ribbons streaming through my hair like Medussa's snakes, all flowing and blowing in the wind...but beautiful..you know. I stayed up til midnight, stamping, gilding, cutting, tying, and before long, I had a cute little ribbon necklace...I put it aside and went to bed.

Next morning I woke up and thought, hmmm, this is not really finished...I think I'd like to add some more ribbon to my necklace, I think I'll go to the store and buy some. (I couldn't send off to B'Sue for it, as there was not enough time...which is the story of my life, but I digress.

I took my project along and went off on a quest to find some ribbon. From store to store, I asked for Sari Ribbon...and no Sari Ribbon. How can there be no Sari Ribbon? If there is a blog about it, it has to exist.

I'm not really a ribbon person, did I tell you that? I'm sure you can all tell by now. Neither is half of my little town, no one and I mean no one knew what sari ribbon was...... the last place I stopped (why is it always the last place and not the first) I was stearnly informed by the little grey haired lady...in a much too condescending tone..."dearie...that's NOT Sari Ribbon. I rushed home and thought what am I to do...it's Thursday night and the party starts at midnight, I looked at the ribbon crying....why didn't you tell me?

I've just become a party crasher!  I've barged into a room with some awesome jewelry artists, none of whom I know and crashed their party and embarassed myself."

The ribbon just sat there a while and finally she spoke..(as if a ribbon could talk..geeze.). She seemed rather mishievious too me... But I did tell you...you were so excited to use me, and I wanted to get out of that drawer, and you were so excited...and I did say....USE ME...I'M JUST A SORRY RIBBON....and she laughed. Hope you all are laughing too.

I will visit you all and say hello and enjoy looking at all your beautiful projects. At least I got out of my jewelry making slump and mixed ribbon and my polymer clay together for something frivolous and fun and hopefully I will make a few friends too!

The beads are a mixture of white and translucent polymer clay, stamped with Lisa Pavelka stamps, baked and then colored with Adirondak alcohol inks. The focal bead is an old thread spool covered with a layer of stamped antique gold Premo clay that was accented with bronze Pearl Ex powder and then baked. the only findings used were the pins inserted into some the clay charms and a few base metal gold spacers. I used knots to tie it all together. It slips over the head and is approximately 20" to the end of the tassles. And the truth is....I really didn't know this was not Sari ribbon until today...the rest of it is pure fiction (just so you know...ribbons can't talk, they only only sing in the shower...or something like that).

On the Horizon......

I love this time of year...seasons changing and the holidays are just around the corner...I'm working on some "harvest time" new items and then on the Christmas ornaments....all of this plus I've been veryt busy getting ready for Atomic Holiday Bazaar . This is a really cool independent crafters show in Sarasota, Fl. It's December the 10th and 11th. I've gone two years as a shopper and this year decided to submit my little creations for approval. I was greatly pleased when I got the news that I was picked to participate in the show. This will be my first real event and it is taking me 6 months to prepare. I will have lots of one of a kind items including jewelry, cards, wine bottle stoppers, treasure boxes and critters. Be sure to watch here for pictures and updates!

It seems that when things happen, they all happen at once. I recently added some new items to theWhite Rabbit Antique and Collectibles store and have been fortunate to have my wine bottle stoppers at the Laughing Ladies. Both stores are in Brandon, Florida and provide a wonderful shopping experience if you are looking for an unusual gift for someone.

I did a few Halloween Bottle Stoppers and they are hits! Don't worry, if you are not a wine drinker, these bottle stoppers come with a little candy jar that you can place them on as well as a wine bottle.

Last but not least, my friend Pat and I did our first "Introduction to Polymer Clay Class" at Breezys Beads. This is my favorite bead store! They have a nice room in the back and we had three people for the class and everyone left with a pendant and earrings.We made some new friends and are going to try another class next week at Breezy's, this time making pumpkins and jack o lanterns. Be sure to sign up early, as the space is very limited.

Its been an eventful month....hubby had emergency surgery, went to Orlando Fandango, flew to MO to visit the grandkids and then my dad in the hospital...plus working 5 days a week and still found a little time to create! Haven't had much time since returning to finish anything I started at Fandango, but here's some items still in progress:

so so inspired that I decided to carve my very own face, using your tutorial as a guide, here is what I came up with...my daughter challenge me to do something feminine: This is translucent clay with alcohol inks...I really wasn't trying to make it so dark, but in real life, it turned out to look very good with sort of an eerie quality. I think I just like the exotic look.

Of course, last but not least, my trip to MO was awesome!! Grandkids were awesome!! Food was awesome!! Family and friends awesome!!

A Day at the Voodoo Cafe

I am enjoying this new blog that I ran across today. Its called Notes from the Voodoo Cafe...by Rice Freeman-Zachery. She posts podcasts of interviews with artists, and she's an author of several books...which I have never read, but am adding to my reading list now!

Well here is her latest .Interview with Christi Friesen at the Voodoo Cafe. Christie is one of my favorite artists! It's not just her work that I love, it's her attitude, her personality and her way of looking at creativity! I will always give Christi the credit for sparking my creative works in clay.

Until I took a class from her, I had no idea what I really wanted to do with clay. I knew I loved it and wanted to pursue art in this direction, but after a couple of years of just reading books, making beads and wondering when would I find my muse....she appeared one day at Lake Yale while I was sitting in a class, making a leaf....I think I almost cried. I looked over at my friend, who was sitting beside me and said....I very excitedly...."I've found my muse"....well...not sure what my words were exactly, but I knew in my heart that I was stepping into a stream that would take me all kind of places

and I was loving it! It was like a 100 watt lightbulb suddenly turned itself on in my head....no it was a breath of fresh air on a hot afternoon...well...maybe it was like realizing how good chocolate really is

...at any rate....my muse had arrived and she's never left.

......................Thanks Christi for opening up my eyes and my brain and my heart....to bring to the surface all the exciting ideas that are rolling around in my head and being able to bring it to life in a tangible form.

Orlando Fandango is just around the corner. May 19th! This will be the second time I've attended this fantastic polymer clay retreat. Each year, the Orlando Area Polymer Clay Guild hosts this teaching/retreat. This year's teachers are Christi Friesen, Maureen Carlson and Penny Jo Couch. Check the Orlando guild link above to see examples of the things we will be doing.

There is so much more to the retreat than the classes...making new friends...reuniting with old friends, observing lots of free demos, eating chocolate, eating ice cream, staying up late, eating chocolate, getting up early, sleeping in, eating chocolate...haha...I guess I am thinking a lot about chocolate right now!

It's four days of just plain fun! And the Orlando Guild works very hard all year long, just to make it happen!

This year retreaters are swaping mini treasure boxes and can bring any handmade item of their choice for a blind brown bag swap. I would love to show you mine, but it's a secret!! I promise to post what I get in return and pictures of what I gave also....AFTER I return.

There are two competitions: Bottles of Hope and Hidden Treasure.

All the artists attending the retreat have the option of having a small area to sell their wares in the Boutique.

Cupcakes Anyone?

Here are my new rings. I took them to Breezy's (my local bead store in Brandon, Florida) so my two friends, Kim and Deb could take a first look. I'm looking for some feedback here. They are chuncky for sure and have a puffy look to them Deb looked at them and said they looked yummy like cupcakes...so....that's what I'm calling them Cupcake Rings...something sweet for the month. I will be listing in my Artfire Shop in about a week. Each is one of a kind, made from polymer clay, with a trendy bottle cap base that is adjustable in size. They are embellished with Swarovski crystals (which I bought at Breezy's Beads) and some have some freshwater pearls also. They are girlie and fun and springy! Hope you enjoy.

Cleaning Day!

Well, the parrot class was ok...I had two students and boy...we worked hard! Everyone was so nice and sooo creative! The sad part is we worked so hard we forgot about the time and everyone had to leave rather quickly, I thought I took pictures, but I must have forgotten because I can't find them on my camera...boo hooo....We are planning a second class, but I need five people to make it worth my time...gas is so expensive and I travel 40 miles each way to do the class.

And you can do so many different things. This time we are gonig to work on using stamps you have with metallic foil and ink. We are also going to learn to make a bullseye cane and a spiral cane.

I also taught another class that week and here are some photos of their focal pendants they made. It was a lot of fun and such nice people! We got together and made seascapes...using charms we had and little pearls and a few other things. Definately a Christie Friesen inspired moment!

Parrot Tutorial

Have fun making your own little birdie. I am teaching a class this month and can't wait to see all the colorful birds that hatch! I will post pics here after the class...it's not til the 29th of March so come back and visit again to see the results!

The parrots starts out as square of polymer that have been conditioned in the pasta machine and they are fairly equal parts, (approximately one in square)but precision is not important. I have mixed my colors to get the hues I wanted, but you are ok to use factory colors.

Next step: roll each color into a log

Line up the logs until they are almost touching and then cut some off the end so they are equal length. Make sure to cut off at least a half an inch. Set these aside because we will use some of these later.

Now, start pushing the logs together vertically until they are stuck together but not too smooshed. The push together from the short end and when it is nice and smooshed together (no gaps) bend in half and roll between your hands to make a ball. it's ok if it doesn't look exactly like this...a lot will be covered up by wings etc.

Now that you have a ball, decide which end is the head and which is the tail and then roll to make a longer piece and pull out on the middle to create the breast of the bird.

Push in to make the head and beak...when you are done, you should have something like this. Its ok if the tail is too long because you can always lop it off later.

I flatten the head and body just a little, so it will lay flat. This makes it much easier to add a bail or a pin back later.

Next, we will take some of the extra clay in whatever color you want and roll into a ball the size you want the wing to be. After you get the size figured out, then roll one end into a little point.

It should be in about these proportions

Next, we are going to flatten the wing and gently smoosh it out and bend, shape to look like this.

Now, we are going to decorate the wing. I have several tools I like, but in this case, I used the smooth pointy end of a little paint brush. You can use a metal tool, a tooth pick, or a wooden clay tool.

Here I used the pointy end of the wooden clay tool to make some little scallopy indents in the clay. There are many ways to do this of course, but in this case, I just kept the clay flat and pushed a little with the stick.

Now we get to cover up all that hard work. Ha ha ha...but you will still see some of it. Now get a contrasting color ...you should have some left over and make a bunch of tiny little balls. I turn the wing upside down to add the feathers because it's easier for me to manipulate the tool. Just make sure you start at the bottom of the wing, or your feathers will end up upside down...not too good for the bird, I'm sure.

To add the feathers simply lay the ball on wing and gently push in while you drag the clay a little bit until it smooshes into the blue. When you start the next row, some of the mess will get covered up...so never fear, if it gets ragged looking...just keep adding feathers till you get to the top!

Wow.....we made it! Now you can lay the wing on the bird.

Now we are going to allow the little birdie to see! The eye is one ball of clay...of contrasting color here...and then you can press a bead or crystal onto the eye. I am using flat back crystals. They will need to be glued after the bird is baked. I press in and leave until after the bird is fired. That way the it will always fit. It will easily pop off later on and you can use a little dot of Locktite or superglue to adhere to the eye socket.

If you have shaped a beak you are almost home free now and you can skip this step.! Wow...can this bird talk!!!! I wanted a little different beak. This not truely a parrot beak...but I live in a fantasy world, so the beak is great for me! I just lopped off the blue beak and added a yellow beak. If you do add a beak, you have to make sure to secure it. I used a round end tool (like the end of the paint brush we used for the feathers) and just smoosh together. (sorry, no picture for that)

Here we add some feet.....the better to walk around!

And now we have some leaves and a couple of flowers...feel free to do your own thing.

I'm Having Too Much Fun

Here is my weekend.....started at 530pm Friday...Zentangle A Thon....at AFA....I've not only been drawing constantly since Friday evening, but we got new furniture, put it all together ( MY HUBBY IS THE BEST!!!) even though no screws came in the box...he managed to make it work! It's a CoolAir bed and it feels great! Then, there was laundry, cleaning up the mess from changing out the bedroom, MORE DRAWING....and then filling the pool then taking the water to Pinch a Penny to have it tested and then MORE DRAWING.....hey....oh...there was a dinner date with that wonderful man....BEST MAN IN THE WORLD!!....stoli raspberry, with soda water and lime, steak, scallops and then there was the new BED! Oh...I digress.......more DRAWING!

Here are just a few of my cards this weekend: trading was hectic and crazy, but lots of fun.

My poor poor little Rita is in the car hospital for who knows how long...and she was so young...I only had her 3 months and today she was rear ended by someone....he was a really nice guy...so apologetic for ruining my day......but just a little pushy....and wasn't watching where he was going and then !!!!KABOOM!!!! we collided. Rita will most likely repair quite nicely. My "older" body needs massage, muscle relaxers and a COCKTAIL!!!

I ended up taking the day off....it takes a long time to take care of all that business and I had to get a rental car....and then I had to talk on the phone a lot to insurance people. I will be back on the road to work by Monday, I'm sure. In the meantime, I'm enjoying the sunshine and a little more down time to post on my artistic adventures.

I just got back from the Orlando Fandango...a retreat with 75 other polymer artists. It was soooo much fun. Here are a few tidbits of what I made....but the learning was much much more! I was really inspired by Christie Friesen, loved learning about the colors with Julie Picarello and thoroughly enjoyed the one on one time with Sarah Shriver as we drove back to the area from Orlando together....wow...you guys are great!!!

This week I went to see a new patient at his home (I'm a hospice nurse). As I was leaving I saw all this artwork on the wall. I asked whose it was and met a wonderful very young (high school, I believe) fiber artist. She had some friends there with her and I got to tell them about working with polymer clay...they hadn't even heard of it! Well that was exciting.

The Polymer Clay Smooshers Guild has been having some great challenges this fall. I've learned so much from them. Stepping outside my comfort zone...moving beyond "safe" and "thinking big" has been my theme lately. Hope you enjoy viewing all of the beautiful masks we've created for the Masquerade Clay Ball. I've Been Fishing!

Lately I've been so busy...work is crazy and I decided to do a weekend art show. Well, needless to say...the middle of August is not the best time to try it out! Wow was it hot! But I did have a lot of fun. My daughter Emily went with me...and helped me soooooo much.

This was our first attempt at a "show". It was free....and thanks to the people at the Nav A Gator Bar and Grill in Arcadia for hosting it on Marina Day. I met some really nice folks and even sold enough jewelry to pay for lunch and drinks.

The crowd was there for another purpose...lunch and beer....and so were not really in the "buying" mood, but all in all for me it was a good experience. I learned some things and got some other good ideas...so it was a positive time.

I hope that the people at the Nav A Gator are doing well...especially Jerry...who took a tumble off the dunking booth and made me work like a nurse at the end of the day. Hope you are doing well Jerry....I was quite worried about you, but got a report the next day that you are getting out of the hospital. Please...if you or someone you know reads this....let me know how you are doing!!!!

Well...you may be wondering what I caught while I was fishing...well, I wassn't really fishing, but since we were spending the day by the Peace River, I decided last minute to cook up some fish and bring them along...here they are...hope you like them. The other pics are of my daughter, my booth and the famous or should I say infamous...dunking booth!

Oh...and one more thing....thanks to April....our server...who kept us happy and hydrated all day! You are the best....the only server I saw that took a turn in the dunking booth. And thanks to Josh...for being so nice and to the owner for allowing us to peddle our wares for a day! We definately will stop by the Nav A Gator whenever we are in the area and enjoy a cold one!

Where did I get the name "treesea". I have always loved the sea...crashing waves, sand, nightbreezes, gulls, sunsets, margaritas....and I am very partial to the forests also...greens and browns, smell of wet leaves, chirping birds, scuttling sound of critters, fairys, elves, dew.

But that's not where the name comes from. My real name is Patrice...but my mom always called me "tricee" (pronounced tree-sea) so...there you go. Mom actually got me started making jewelry. It was a great passtime of hers and when she was no longer able to make lots of things, she started giving away all her beads etc. Well, I took some of them, but never made a thing. Then one day I wanted a lanyard to hold my badge that would match something I was wearing (I'm a hospice nurse). I decided it didn't look to hard to do so I made one. That day at work, a co-worker saw it and said...wow...I like that... where can I get one. I said "I guess I could make you one".....and there it started....that was about 3 years ago and I have been making jewelry ever since. Yes...I am a newbie! To jewelry and to clay!

After living almost 1000 miles from my daughter for most of her grown up life, she has come home to roost. She recently graduated from college (University of Kentucky) and wanted to spread her wings, or maybe just get out of Dodge for a while, so she came to Florida!

Ed is enjoying having her here...and I am thrilled. It's a great time for both of us.

Emily is a fiber artist and mixed media artist...I hope I'm saying that right. The photo here is

some her art. Some of it has sold already and some is in a gallery show in Kentucky.

Recently, I've been cultivating my creative side, by dabbling in polymer clay. So this is a special time for both of us. We have a little studio in our spare bedroom and it gets very messy...but that's what happens when two creative people spread out! Watch for pictures of other things she has done, and check out her blog as well.
